Looking for an Hour of Code activity that will engage your secondary students? Try this lesson from Code.org that integrates music, texting, and saving time. Students will use the Text Compression Widget to compress segments of English text by looking for patterns and substituting symbols for larger patterns of text.
The Hour of Code activity has students exploring the Text Compression widget, then connect the process to some real world examples by viewing a video featuring Aloe Blacc. After the video, students go back to the widget to compress the poem as much as possible without losing any of the content. This activity is meant to be collaborative and could be a friendly competition between groups. Teachers may find the optional Student Activity Guide handy to scaffold the hour long activity for students.
